On December 16, 2011, Typhoon Washi struck the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The storm dumped one month’s worth of rain on the area in a period of 12 hours and caused landslides and flash flooding that devastated the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. The flooding drowned residents in their sleep, sweeping away homes made of light materials, while others tried to escape by climbing onto rooftops. Over 650 people have been killed, another 800 are missing and 500,000 people are in need of access to clean drinking water.

GlobalMedic's local Rapid Response Team in the Philippines is deploying along with water purification units to provide people in the affected areas with immediate access to clean drinking water. In addition, GlobalMedic is mobilizing a Rapid Response Team in Toronto that will deploy along with 1 million water purification tablets and 144,000 water purification sachets. These will be able to provide over 11.4 million litres of clean drinking water.
