GlobalMedic director Rahul Singh held a presentation showing the work that GlobalMedic has been doing in Haiti at a School in Toronto where students have raised over $1000 since the devastating earthquake on February 12th.
GlobalMedic will be using the funds raised to purchase a Trekker Water Purification Unit for an orphanage in Haiti on behalf of the students at Fieldstone School.

On Monday, February 15th, members of the GlobalMedic team loaded humanitarian into an aircraft provided by Skyservice Airlines. Skyservice Airlines has agreed to fly humanitarian aid items down to the Dominican Republic for free. To date, Skyservice Airlines has provided cargo space and 16 free tickets to GlobalMedic team members. Skyservice Airlines is committed to continuing the support and donating another 10 tons of cargo space and more tickets for responding GlobalMedic teams to deploy.
Corporate Canada has responded to the call and are donating items to be added to the airlift. The goods will land in Puerto Plata, be cleared by customs and then trucked into Haiti by GlobalMedic team members.
The packing list is extensive. Examples of companies and donated product are listed below:
- Alveda Pharmaceuticals: essential medicines valued over $1,100,000 including penicillin and lidocaine
- Cummins: 41 generators
- Procter and Gamble: PUR sachets; purifier of water
- Viva Solar: Hand held crank flashlights
- Sears Canada: Tents
- Oral Rehydration Sachets
- Water Purification Tablets
- Water Purification Units
Companies like Alveda Pharmaceuticals; Cummins; CS World Cargo; Network Cargo, Procter and Gamble, Skyservice Airlines, and Viva Solar and Sears Canada are coming together to help Haitians in their time of need. The donated products are worth over 2 million dollars and will earthquake survivors in Haiti. GlobalMedic has deployed two inflatable field hospital units to Haiti; distributed over 5 million water purification tablets and installed 64 water purification units with a capacity to produce over 550,000 litres of water a day.

The town of Markham and the Filipino community in the GTA presented GlobalMedic with two cheques totaling $37,800.00 to go towards the ongoing mission for GlobalMedic in the Philippines.

Members of GlobalMedic’s Rapid Response Team packed and delivered hundreds of toys and a quarter ton of cereal to the Toronto Children’s Breakfast Club. Volunteers sorted and packed the donated items at GlobalMedic Headquarters in Toronto and also distributed over a thousand blankets to local refugee and homeless shelters. These gifts will help brighten the holiday season for families in need of assistance. As GlobalMedic recently deployed volunteers from the city to disaster relief operations in the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, it is a great opportunity for GlobalMedic to give back to the people of Toronto.

GlobalMedic was proud to donate a consignment of medical equipment to the International Alzheimer’s Organization Inc (INALOR), a registered Canadian charity. The consignment was loaded onto a sea freight container destined for Cameroon. The medical supplies will be distributed by INALOR throughout local hospitals and health clinics. Stay posted for pictures of distribution in the coming months.

GlobalMedic RRT volunteers joined the Children’s Breakfast Club, Toronto Police, Fire and EMS in support of the Tour de University Heights bike race. The race supports youth from priority neighbourhoods in Toronto, and provides them with free bicycles and helmets as well as summer training with members of the Toronto Police and Ontario Cycling Association to prepare them for the race. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the Bike Rodeo as well as marshalling and traffic duties. The day was a great success with hundreds of children and youth riding in a bike race for the first time!

GlobalMedic presented the Pickering Fire Services with an appreciation award for the generous donation of 10 defibrillators.
The defibrillators were donated and placed in service with the Honduras Red Cross Paramedic Services in Tegucigalpa. All staff working with the Red Cross in Tegucigalpa have been trained by GlobalMedic on the operation and maintenance of the units. They will go a long way in helping to provide a better care in the event of cardiac arrest.

GlobalMedic presented Constable Richard Fantinato of the Durham Regional Police Department with an award for his humanitarian achievements in Haiti, September 2008. Constable Fantinato volunteered his time to represent GlobalMedic and to extend the Canadian spirit of charity. Constable Fantinato was part of a GlobalMedic Rapid Response Team that deployed from Toronto to aid victims of the flooding. In total, the team donated, distributed and installed 10 Trekker Water Purification Units, 1 Explorer Water Purification Unit and 1 million Aquatab Water Purification Tablets. The 11 water purification units provided more than 45,000 beneficiaries daily with clean drinking water while the 1 million Aquatab water purification tablets purified 1 million litres of water.
Working tirelessly under grueling conditions, Cst. Fantinato remained calm and displayed a sense of caring while installing water purification systems and distributing aid. The awards ceremony was held in Whitby at the Durham Regional Police Headquarters where Matt Capobianco and Chief Mike Ewles presented him with his award along with a certificate from Premier Dalton McGunity recognizing his exemplary contributions.

On October 8th, GlobalMedic conducted an outdoor Search and Rescue field exercise at the Pickering Cliffs. This was an advanced course for SAR trained volunteers which reviewed SAR 1 and 2 principles and techniques including lowering and self-rescue, in addition to the introduction of advanced hauling systems. The training was a great success and included various field scenarios to prepare trainees for future deployments. Thanks to all who attended and to our master trainer Tim Standley for facilitating the day.

On Sunday, September 28 GlobalMedic proudly received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Burma Cyclone Relief Committee and the International Burmese Monks Organization.
GlobalMedic was recognized for its efforts after Cyclone Nargis in Burma.

On August 14th, 2008, the Honourable Beverly J. Oda of International Cooperation announced the Canadian Government’s support for the victims of the May 12th, 2008 earthquake in China's Sichuan Province in the amount of $31.4 million, $30 million of which were matching funds. GlobalMedic is proud to announce that in association with the Canadian government and specifically the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), it has received $341,600 to run water programs in the Sichuan Province. GlobalMedic’s initial disaster response included the donation and distribution of 20 Trekker (4 L drinking water / min each) water purification units, 1 Nomad (100 L / min) water purification unit and 5 million Aquatab water purification tablets (1 tab purifies 1 L of water).
Now with CIDA funding GlobalMedic will provide and additional 120 Trekker water purification units and 8.4 million Aquatab water purification tablets which will support 100,000 disaster victims for more than 2 months. This assistance will allow victims to start rebuilding their lives by improving the overall health for them and their families, thus allowing them to perform the functions they need to survive in times of great hardship.

Today, GlobalMedic held a press conference to announce its second deployment to China following the May 12th earthquake.
Currently, the health situation in the affected zone is still dire. With the summer brings increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. Clean drinking water and diarrhea continues to be a major concern for quake survivors.
GlobalMedic will be expanding its current operations in China by providing enough water purification units and water purification tablets to produce enough clean drinking water for 50,000 people for 2 months. GlobalMedic will be deploying the following in partnership with the People’s Republic of China:
> Distribution of 4.2 million Aquatab Water Purification Tablets
> Installation of 60 water purification systems in isolated regions to populations who are cut off from aid
> Provide training to local water bureaus and members of affected communities on the operation and maintenance of the water purification units
